The Voluntown Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining town roads, snow removal, and the upkeep of town vehicles. The Public Works crew also assists in the maintaining of town property, including the school and recreation areas.


To report a hazard in the roadway

If a hazard is blocking traffic and/or is life threatening, dial 9-1-1 to report it. Dispatch notifies Public Works and/or the fire department and/or Eversource.
A message can always be left with the Selectmen’s Office 860-376-5880.

All roads in the town are maintained by The Department of Public Works with the exception of State Roads routes 49, 138, 165, which are maintained by CT DOT Occum Office at (860) 823-3204

Carroll Road Bridge Closing February 6

Please be advised that effective Monday, February 6,2023, the Town of Griswold will be closing the above-mentioned structure on Carroll Road. All recipients of this notice should verify that all necessary entities or departments within your jurisdiction were notified. The closure will remain in effect until the structure is completely removed at which time the roadway will be permanently closed.

Detour route from the Voluntown side will be back out to route 138 and onto Sheldon Road in Griswold.

CT DOT RT49 Paving Project

PRESS RELEASE

NEWINGTON, CT – The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (Department) Office of Engineering is developing plans to rehabilitate the pavement on CT Route 49 in the Towns of
Voluntown and Sterling. The project involves rehabilitating the pavement on CT Route 49 between mile markers 13.52 and 21.74.

The purpose of the project is to preserve the pavement condition. The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in December 2022, with construction anticipated to start in the
spring of 2023, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with 0% federal and 100% state funds.

It is the Department’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with the Department to assist in
the project’s development. A public informational meeting will not be conducted for this project as its scope is considered routine maintenance.

Bassett Mill Rd Paving

Paving of Bassett Mill Road is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 30, 2022. Traffic will still be able to pass through.


Drain Replacement on Wylie School Rd

Drain replacement on Wylie School Rd is expected to begin on Monday, August 15, and continue through the week. Work area will be from Shetucket Tpk towards 49 to the bridge at the curve.  The road will be one way at times. Please proceed with caution and plan accordingly.

Grass Seeding on Constitution Field and Track Area

Grass seeding is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 3 on Constitution Field and on the grass by the walking track. The field and area will be closed while seeding is taking place. These locations will be open for the month of May for light use only so that the seed can germinate.

Forge Hill Bridge Open As One Lane Bridge Until Further Notice

THE FORGE HILL BRIDGE IS NOW OPEN AS A ONE LANE BRIDGE. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TRAFFIC PATTERN HAS BEEN CHANGED AT THE WYLIE SCHOOL RD/FORGE HILL RD/ NORTH SHORE ROAD INTERSECTION. IT IS NO LONGER A 2 WAY STOP, BUT IS NOW A THREE WAY STOP SO DRIVERS CAN PREPARE SAFELY FOR THE ONE LANE BRIDGE. PLEASE PROCEED ACCORDINGLY.
