Why Did We Do the Salary Study?

  1. Compliance with Federal Minimum Wage Requirements: Salaried employees were earning less than the federal minimum wage. Without salary increases, these employees.  If we didn’t increase salaries, these employees would then have to be paid overtime for any hours over 40 hours per week.
  2. Regional Benchmarking: Surrounding towns conducted salary surveys. Voluntown was able to use Sterling's salary survey to reduce costs.
  3. Competitive Job Market: Staff received frequent job offers from other towns, often at significantly higher salaries, some advertised as double Voluntown rates.
  4. Recruitment Challenges: Job postings attracted few applicants from Voluntown. Most candidates withdrew upon learning about the part-time status or low pay.
  5. Multi-Role Responsibilities: To keep the expenses from hiring new staff down, many employees take on multiple roles. The salary study included the updating of the job descriptions to include current responsibilities.
