Applying for a Temporary Pistol Permit

Pistol permits are applied for in the town in which you reside. In Voluntown, pistol permit applications are done through the Selectmen's Office. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older. Please call Tracey in the Selectmen's Office at 860-376-5880 for more information.

Effective July 16, 2021, the State of Connecticut has changed the fingerprinting process for obtaining a pistol permit. Applicants must first submit a completed Pistol Permit Application to the Selectman's Office. Next, you must pre-enroll on the State of Connecticut Criminal History Request website, pay the applicable state and federal fees, and obtain an applicant tracking number before going to a fingerprinting location. Pistol Permit Application Process

Application

Submit a completed Pistol Permit Application with all required documents and include a check for $70 made payable to the Town of Voluntown. Application to be submitted to the Voluntown Town Hall Selectmen's Office. 

Required Documents

  • Completed notarized Pistol Permit Application.
  • Noncriminal Justice Applicant's Privacy Rights
  • FBI Privacy Act Statement
  • A copy of your Firearms Safety and Use Course Certificate 
  • A copy of your Certificate of Completion
  • A copy of your driver's license
  • A copy of your birth certificate or passport

Fingerprints

You must pre-enroll on the State of Connecticut portal before getting fingerprinted for your pistol permit. You will have to pay the state and federal fees of $75 and $12.00 through the portal during the pre-enrollment process. You will receive a pistol permit service code when you submit your application that you will use to Pre-Enroll on the Website.

Once you have enrolled and paid the applicable fees, print the page with the barcode and your applicant tracking number that the portal generated for you. This page will be emailed to you. Bring this sheet with you to the fingerprinting location.

Final Submission

Email the sheet with the barcode and your applicant tracking number to thanson@voluntown.gov  When your background check is complete, the Selectmen's office will send out your 60-day Temporary Pistol Permit.

When the town receives a criminal history record report from the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, you will be notified of the approval or rejection of your temporary pistol permit by the Town of Voluntown. This temporary permit is effective for 60 days.

Within 60 days, you must apply to the Department for the state permit.
