Job Opening: Public Works Laborer

The Town of Voluntown is seeking qualified candidates to fill the part time position of Public Works Laborer.  Please submit a Town of Voluntown job application to apply. Performs a variety of tasks related to construction and repair of facilities, and the maintenance of grounds, highways, equipment and facilities, requiring the operation of several types of vehicles and general labor work.


Operates motor vehicles such as light trucks, light snow plows, and power-driven rollers; operates compressors and chain saws; cleans gutters, sweeps streets, digs ditches, shovels materials such as sand, stone, etc., and spreads patching materials; assists with snow removal and sanding operations when required; acts as groundskeeper: rakes leaves, cuts grass, weeds, and brush by hand or with power equipment. General building maintenance.


Performs related work as required.


Works under the direction of a designated supervisor.


One (1) or more years general knowledge of labor practices with experience in driving trucks and/or motor vehicles and special motorized equipment. The ability to use laboring tools and motorized equipment. The ability to understand and follow oral instructions and to read and write English. The ability to interact with the general public and other employees.


This is a physically demanding job and the employee is frequently required to: stand; walk; bend; twist; stoop or crouch; sit; climb stairs to various levels; use hands, fingers, wrists for repetitive motion; drive; get in and out of vehicles; tolerate exposure to weather, domestic animals and environmental allergens; must maintain continuous visual acuity including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and may be required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to extremely loud depending on the task or equipment being used. Employee must be free from mental and physical disorders which would interfere with performance of duties as described.


Must possess valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle License.
