The Voluntown Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining town roads, snow removal, and the upkeep of town vehicles. The Public Works crew also assists in the maintaining of town property, including the school and recreation areas.

To report a hazard in the roadway:
If a hazard is blocking traffic and/or is life threatening, dial 9-1-1 to report it. Dispatch notifies Public Works and/or the fire department and/or Eversource.
A message can always be left with the Selectmen’s Office 860-376-5880.

All roads in the town are maintained by The Department of Public Works with the exception of State Roads routes 49, 138, 165, which are maintained by CT DOT Occum Office at (860) 823-3204

Sump Pumps and Icy Road Patches

For the safety of all residents and those traveling on town roadways, Public Works is asking that residents please not direct their sump pump discharge to drain water directly onto town roads because of hazardous ice patches being formed.


Road Closures for Drain Work

Public Works will be closing Wylie School Rd east side at the Shetucket Tpk. intersection tomorrow, Thursday (7/9) and Friday (7/10) to repair/replace drains. No driveways will be blocked. Please use Forge Hill Rd to enter/exit the area.

Pending the weather, on Monday (7/13) and Tuesday (7/14) Shetucket Tpk will be closed right before the intersection with Wylie School Rd to repair/replace drains. No driveways will be blocked. Forge Hill Rd, Wylie School Rd west, or Campbell Mill Rd will have to be used as detours, depending on where you are coming from/going.

Week of 6/29/20

‘No Parking’ lines and SLOW will be painted on North Shore Rd in front of the beach within the next couple of weeks. 15 mile per hour signs were installed by the boat launch.

Possible Road Delays and Public Works Update

Expect lane closures 7am-5pm, Monday-Friday on 49S. The CT DOT is working on RT 49S (Pendleton Hill Rd) between rt 216 in North Stonington and rt 165 in Voluntown. The DOT is doing an asphalt rubber chip sealing project. Crack sealing and road patching will occur before the placement of chip seal.

Our Public Works crew has preparing Wylie School rd for paving. They have been clearing out  existing drain pipes so they can be inspected to see if they need replacing. The drain pipes  in the section of the road are about 100 years old and before paving, the drain pipes that don’t pass inspection will be replaced

Road sweeping has started.  Will be working on Hi Top Rd, Wilson Rd, Forge Hill, Tangelwood area of town. Please be aware of the crew on the road.

Work on Campbell Mill Rd to control erosion of the road was completed and guard rails were installed.

Tree removal has been ongoing.
Mowing has been ongoing.
Salt and sand has been re-stocked.

Week of 9/23/19

  • Road side mowing will be taking place on Wylie School Road and Sheteucket Turnpike this week.
  • Plow Bids, Salt/Sand Bids, and Fuel Bids are all due to the Selectmen’s Office by 6PM Tuesday, September 24th.
  • Paving of Laurel Drive and the curbing on Wilson Rd is supposed to start this week. We are waiting for confirmation from the paving company.
  • We welcome our newest Public Works Laborer employee, Jeff Laney, who started on September 3. Jeff has extensive experience in landscaping and we are glad to have him has part of our team.

State Forest Access Road Closure on Hell Hollow Dec 17-24th

The State Forest throughway on Hell Hollow will be closed by the State Monday through Friday December 17-24 due to tree trimming. Posted on December 14, 2018
